Speakers at a seminar on Saturday stressed the need for punishing those responsible for tragic accidents like Rana Plaza building collapse and finding out the true reasons behind such disasters in order to prevent recurrence of such tragedies in the future.
The seminar on ‘Preventing Savar-Like Tragedy: The Role of Engineering and Relevant Authority’ was held at ERC Seminar Room of IEB (New Building) in the city. Bashundhara Cement sponsored the event.
Md Nurul Huda, chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), attended the programme as the chief guest while Dr Gholam Mostofa, chairman, Civil Engineering Division, IEB, presided over it.
Speaking at the seminar, RAJUK Chairman Md Nurul Huda mentioned that bureaucratic complicacy is the main obstacle to doing anything good. Any work could be done smoothly if such complicacy can be removed, he added.
The RAJUK chairman also claimed that he has reorganised the ‘ineffective’ RAJUK. “It (RAJUK) was an ineffective organisation before my taking over as its chairman. I have been working to make it an effective organisation for the last three and a half years,” he said.
Md Saiful Islam Helaly, Chief Marketing Officer, Cement Sector, Bashundhara Group, said the real reasons behind the disasters like Rana Plaza building collapse should be found out and the persons responsible for this must be punished to stop such tragedies.
He also stressed the need for creating awareness among people about constructing buildings following proper rules.
Engr Mohd. Golam Mostafa presented the keynote paper in the seminar.
In the keynote paper, he underscored the need for strictly following the building code during any construction to avoid accidents.
“There was no technical fault in the design of the collapsed Rana Plaza, but the owner used substandard materials in the construction,” he added.
