The daily Kaler Kantho, a leading Bangla newspaper of the country and a concern of East West Media Group Ltd (EWMGL), stepped into the 4th year Thursday with a vow to foster impartial journalism in the country.

A king-sized cake was cut on the premises of EWMGL in Bashundhara residential area in the city to mark completion of three years of the newspaper.

Managing Director of Bashundhara Group Sayem Sobhan was present and felicitated the journalists and employees of Kaler Kantho on the occasion.

He greeted Imdadul Haque Milon, editor of Kaler Kantho, with a bouquet on successful run of the newspaper. He also wishes continuous prosperity of Kaler Kantho and hopes the newspaper will achieve “more success in the future by practising impartial journalism.”

Although the founding anniversary of Kaler Kantho was not celebrated with much fanfare this year, different organisations and noted personalities of the country warmly greeted the Kaler Kantho family by sending bouquets.

The organisations include Dhaka Newspaper Hawkers Bahumukhi Samabay Samity Ltd, DGFI, Dhaka Regency Hotel and Resort, Maasranga Television, GTV, Bangladesh Protidin, Masthead PR, Ocean Group, Top of Mind, Standard Chartered Bank, Islami Bank and Citycell.

The biggest ever vertical rolling mill (VRM) of the country’s cement industry kicked off in the district on Monday morning.

Mr.Sayem Sobhan Anvir and Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque inaugurated the Bashundhara Cement factory.
BG Chairman’s Chief Advisor Mahbub Morshed Hassan presided over the inaugural programme at Sundarbans Industrial Complex.
Addressing the programme, KCC mayor said, “The people of Mongla are proud of Bashundhara Group (BG) for the initiative.”
“I am expressing gratitude to the Chairman of Bashundhara Group Ahmed Akbar Sobhan for choosing Mongla,” he added.

Talukder Abdul Khaleque said, “Some people have left their industrial plots unused till now. But chairman of Bashundhara Group has kept his word and changed the scenario of Mongla though setting up industrial factories one by one.”
The mayor also hoped that Bashundhara Group would give priority to generate employment for the local people in future.

According to organizers, Bashundhara Group is now producing about 12 lakh tons of cement annually. The total production of the group will reach 24 lakh tones after the new VRM cement factory goes into operation.

The programme was attended, among others, by BG Managing Director Sayem Sobhan, Editor-in-Chief of country’s first online portal banglanews24.com Alamgir Hossain, Editor of the Daily Kaler Kantho Emdadul Haque Milon, Editor of Bangladesh Protidin Naem Nizam and BG Senior Deputy Manager Belayet Hossain.

Deputy-Managing Director Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy-Managing Director (Cement) Engineer AKM Mahbub-Uj-Zaman, Agrani Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Syed Abdul Hamid, NCC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive M Nurul Amin and Dhaka Bank Managing Director Khandakar Fazle Rashid also attended the event.

Bashundhara Steel and Engineering Limited (BSEL) has made the ship at a cost of Tk 100 million and the vessel will be used for carrying cement clinkers.

Bashundhara Group (BG) Managing Director (MD) Sayem Sobhan Anvir inaugurated the ship, having carrying capacity of 2,500 metric tonnes of cargoes.

Among others, Chief advisor to the Chairman of Bashundhara Group Mahaboob Morshed Hassan, BG Senior MD Belayet Hossain, Lt Col (retd) Khandaker Abdul Wahed, Advisor (Press and Media) Mohammad Abu Tayeb, Senior Executive Director of Bashundhara Steel and Engineering Limited (BSEL) Capt Mohd Ruhul Amin and BSEL Head of Division Capt (retd) SM Shah Alam were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Apart from other business sectors, the Group engaged in shipbuilding business in 2002 through BSEL.

The BSEL secured a strong position in shipbuilding business of the country keeping pace with the developed countries. It has started its journey by building lighter ship to carry sand.

The BSEL has already built 34 sand carrying ships and 13 dredgers with its own technology and logistic support.

The Bashundhara Logistics-35 has got certificate from Royal Italiano Navelo (RINA), an Italy-based international ship classification and certification authority, to move into the sea across the world.

After the inaugural ceremony, Mohammad Abu Tayeb told journalists that the 72.81 metre long and 13.5 metre width ship which was built after 20 months’ effort can move into any area of sea as it has got RINA certification.

“The Bashundhara Logistics-35 ship has been floated as one of the BSEL’s 14 under- construction ships,” he said.

Mentioning the extraordinary quality of products made by Bashundhara Group, he said the ships are made with extra care and high technology and cheaper compared to other companies.
