Speakers at a discussion Friday said the detailed plan, structural, architectural and electrical drawings and the fire-safety features of a structure should be designed only by the experts and those needed to be approved by a professional consulting firm before constructing the building.
The discussants made the observation at a discussion meeting titled ‘Building Safety Assessment’, jointly organised by country’s leading cement producer Bashundhara Cement and Civil Engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
The discussion, anchored by Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman, chairman of Civil Engineering department of BUET, was aired on private television channel ETV.
The speakers also observed that usage of low-quality cement, rods and sand is one of the main causes of building collapse, adding that maintaining the right proportion of cement, water and sand is very important during the construction of a building.
They stressed the need for appointing professional architecture firms to supervise the construction work.
Prof Dr Ahsanul Kabir, Prof Dr Mehedi Ahmed Ansari, Prof Dr Md Sekander Ali of BUET and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md Atiqul Islam attended the function, among others.
